What is the R-value of a window?

R-value is a measure of thermal resistance – in other words, how well a material resists the flow of heat. The concept is most commonly associated with insulation, where higher R-values mean better resistance to heat moving through walls, ceilings, and floors. The same principle applies to windows.

A window with a higher R-value resists heat flow more effectively than one with a lower R-value. That means less heat entering your home in summer and less warmth escaping in winter. The rating accounts for all parts of the window working together: the glass, any gas fills between panes, coatings applied to the glass surface, and the frame itself.

It’s worth noting that windows, even high-performing ones, have relatively modest R-values compared to insulated walls. A well-insulated exterior wall might have an R-value of 13 or higher, while even a premium triple-glazed window might reach R-5 or R-6. That’s not a flaw in the window – it’s simply the nature of glass compared to solid insulation.

What is a good R-value for a window?

For practical reference, here’s how window R-values generally break down by construction type:

  • A basic single-pane window offers an R-value of roughly R-1, providing almost no meaningful insulation.
  • Double-paned windows – the standard in most modern replacement windows – typically rate between R-2 and R-3, a significant improvement over single-pane windows.
  • High-performance double-glazed windows with Low-E coatings and argon gas fills can push into the R-3 to R-4 range.

U-value is the rating you’ll most commonly see on the NFRC label: the standardized energy performance label that appears on certified replacement windows. It’s the industry standard measurement for window thermal performance, which is why manufacturers and certification programs like ENERGY STAR use it as their primary reference point rather than R-value.

R-value vs. U-value: What’s the difference?

The straightforward answer is that R-value and U-value are two sides of the same coin. R-value measures resistance to heat flow; U-value measures the rate of heat flow. Mathematically, they’re inverses of each other – if you know one, you can calculate the other by dividing 1 by the number (so a window with a U-value of 0.25 has an R-value of 4, and vice versa).

  • R-value originated in the building insulation world and remains the familiar term for most homeowners when discussing walls and attics.
  • U-value became the standard in the window and door industry because it more precisely captures the dynamic way heat moves through glass assemblies, which behave differently from solid insulation materials.

R-value tends to come up more in general conversations about home energy efficiency. What factors affect a window’s R-value and U-value?
